The Iconic Maine Moose

By Nathan Theriault

Maine is home to the largest eastern Canadian moose population in the lower 48 states. The unprecedented millions of acres of northern Maine forests provide the perfect habitat for true giants. This iconic animal is highly sought after by sightseers and hunters. Compared to Canada and Alaska, a Maine moose hunt is both affordable and easy to get to for a large population of U.S. hunters. The ability to drive to the hunt and bring home a freezer load of high-quality meat is an attractive benefit for sportsmen looking for a trophy moose. In addition, tenting is optional because indoor lodging and meals are convenient to many high-success hunting areas. A good gravel road system helps hunters with mobility issues get close to harvest opportunities without long hikes. Wi-Fi and cell service are available in many areas, benefiting those unable to disconnect, and the success rate is north of 60%. Permits are awarded in four ways:

  1. Annual Lottery: 308 permits out of roughly 4,000 issued were awarded to non-residents in 2024. Non-residents, unlike residents, can purchase an unlimited number of chances with 2024 odds in the 1 in 80 range. Bonus points are accumulated for each consecutive year an application is made.
  2. Auction: Ten tags are auctioned by the Department each year to fund youth outdoor programs. Bids range from $15,000 to $30,000.
  3. Lodge: Qualified hunting lodges compete in a lottery for 2% of permits authorized which must be sold in a package to include a licensed guide, lodging, and meals.
  4. Disabled Veterans: 25 depredation tags go by lottery to Maine residents with valid disabled veteran hunting licenses. A few tags may be issued to sponsored Maine Veterans and to nonresident disabled veterans sponsored by a National Veterans Organization.
